Bushbuckridge local municipality is the gateway to the world renowed Kruger National Park. Bushbuckridge covers an almost 36km radious with a population of about one million residence, with migratory labour system playing a dominant part of large groups of men who in the south african mines. The municipality is a combination of two homeland districts namely Mapulaneng (Lebowa Government) and Mhala (Gazankulu Government)

The local municipality mainly consists of the mapulane Tribe predominately found along the drankesburg mountain: the Tsonga or Shangaan tribes are found mostly in the eastern part and northern part of Bushbuckridge. The Swati Tribe is in the southern part of Bushbuckridge. These  tribes boast amongst themselves 10 traditional authorities and each with a chief known as Kgoshi

the tribes in the area all practise their own cultural activities amongst themselves passing these activities from one genration to the next. Cultural activities include but are not limited to Muchongolo, Dinaka, Magagse, Xipenda-Penda, Mthimba, Xibaqa and Makwaya which is practised by Mozambicians who have settled in the eastern part of Bushbuckridge at Welverdiend and Hlavukani from 1975
